With the show season drawing to a close, we are reflecting on the sheep that have won the ribbons across the country.

Show season ring round-up: Dairy champions

We look at the inter-breeds from six notable shows across England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland.  

The cattle pictured below were all inter-breed champions at their relevant show.  

Who is your favourite champion from the 2023 show season?

 

Balmoral   

Damm Tatoo Sallie from Martin  

Supreme champion in the dairy rings at Balmoral show was the Holstein champion Damm Tatoo Sallie, a VG89 cow in milk from husband and wife Martin and Cyrill Millar, Londonderry .  

The second calver was purchased by the Millar family at last years Northern Ireland summer sizzler sale, from David and George Simpson, Lisburn for 18,500gns, a record price on the day.  

Out of Damm Goldsun Sallie, the champion gave 9,500kg in her first lactation andis currently giving 50kg daily fresh into her second lactation.

Cardinney Bontino Winner 3 EX92  

In the Royal Cornwall dairy section, the Jersey claimed top honours.  

This was Cardinney Bontino Winner 3 EX92, sired by Carnbrae Bontino and exhibited by Rosmary, James, Shelly and Sophia Warren who are based in Penzance. She was which on her first outing of the summer and is producing 38kg daily.

Glanmor Levi Okapi  

In the dairy rings for the second year running at the Three Counties show, the supreme award went to the any other breed champion, the Guernsey 2018-born Glanmor Levi Okapi, a third calver from Michael Dawes, Banbury.

Royal Highland  

Eedy Crushabull Acclaim

Holstein champion Eedy Crushabull Acclaim clinched the inter-breed dairy title at this year's Royal Highland Show. 

From father and son duo, Brian and Michael Yates, of Logan Holsteins, Castle Douglas, the second calver was bought privately last year from Robert and Jason Helen, Southern Ireland.  

Shown giving 55kg daily, the VG89 cow was crowned super heifer at Agriscot in 2022, as well as taking home the reserve supreme championship at this year's Dairy Expo.

Great Yorkshire   

Churchroyd Bronte Wildeyes 51 

It was the Dairy Shorthorn champion Churchroyd Bronte Wildeyes 51, a fourth calver from the Collins family, Dewsbury, which scooped the dairy inter-breed championship and the best exhibitor bred award at the Great Yorkshire Show.  

No stranger to the titles, the seven-year-old cow in-milk also took home the inter-breed championship at the Great Yorkshire Show in 2021 and claimed the championship at Dairy Day the same year.

Windyridge Tequila Diamond 

It was the Jersey champion, which was the choice of judge, Mark Logan, Northern Ireland to take the supreme dairy title  

This was Windyridge Tequila Diamond by Towevue Prime Tequila out of Shellen Connection Diamond from Emma and Philip Manning Shrewsbury. The seventh calver which is giving 38kg daily was also breed champion at the show in 2018 and breed champion at Dairy Day the same year and had not been shown since.
