Charollais ewe claims supreme championship

THE supreme sheep title at Lincolnshire Show went to the Charollais champion, Dalby Uzabelle, a four-shear ewe by Dalby Ranieri, out of Loanhead Maggie and whose grandam was the formerly female breed record holder, Dalby Jezabelle.

Bred and exhibited by Charles Sercombe, Melton Mowbray, it was sold two years ago at the Dalby Coral sale for 2,500gns to Tim Prichard's Castellau flock. It was then bought back by Mr Sercombe for 2,600gns when the flock was dispersed earlier this year.

Standing reserve was the Texel champion, a home-bred ewe lamb from Paul Castle's Ulmus flock, Peterborough.

By his stock ram, Sportsmans Eyecatcher, out of a Garngour Craftman-sired ewe, it was also a winner at Suffolk Show.

Lincolnshire hosted the Southdown national show, with the championship going to Harry Wood's Windrush flock Usk, with a two-shear ram by Percheron, and reserve to a shearling ewe from Lizze Sargents Offham flock, Lewes.

BEEF

In the beef rings, the inter-breed championship went to Dylan Townend, Malton, with Clifftown Rumour Has It, a 21-year-old home-bred British Blue heifer.

By Magloire de Fontena out of Clifftown Ladyluck, its dam was champion at the show two years ago and its sister last year.

The reserve champion rosette went to the any other continental breed champion, Woodline Pollyanna, a four-year-old Charolais cow from Harvey Wood, Hull. The daughter of Wansford Magnus, it was shown with its bull calf by Maerdy Mawr at foot.

Judge Jimmy McMillan, Bury St Edmunds, said the inter-breed was a really good line-up of cattle and his champion had great style and walked very well.

The Lincoln Red championship went to Walmer Alberta, a two-year-old bull by Houghton Warden from H.M. and J.M. Needler, Ranby.
In reserve was Yarn Hill Acora B971, a January 2022-born heifer from Iken Hall Farms, Woodbridge, which also claimed the junior inter-breed title.

DAIRY

It was the Holstein champion which was the choice of judge, Sam Wake, Kettering, for the dairy supreme.

This was Meldamar Victor Belle 96, a home-bred second calver by Legend Maker Victor, from J.M. and D. Shepherd and Sons, Bakewell, who also took the title last year with another animal.

Having calved in December and currently producing 45kg daily, it was being shown for the first time and will be heading to the Great Yorkshire Show next.

The reserve championship went to Barn Owl Jerseys, Brackley, with Barn Owl Excitation Sunspot, a third calver by Bridon Excitation, which was also breed champion at the show last year and remained unbeaten all season. Having been calved a month, it is giving 33kg daily.

Mr Wake said the champion had great openness of rib and just carried its milk a little higher and had a little more venation than the reserve.

PIGS

Chris Hudson, Newark, took the inter-breed pig championship, with Maerose Royal Eros 140, a July 2022-born home-bred Landrace boar by Deer Park Royal Eros. It has already been breed champion at Nottinghamshire and Northumberland shows this season.

In reserve was Raisinhall Peterbilt 8, a July 2022-born Hampshire boar by Raisinhall Peterbilt 6 from Stuart Roberts and Jodie Fairclough, Bedale, which was inter-breed champion at Northumberland Show earlier in the year.

Judge William Gregory, Selby, said his champion had ‘good length, was great on its legs and walked very well'.
