Funding to get schools growing potatoes

New funding enables 8,000 free potato-growing kits to be made available for primary schools nationwide.

Retail giant Tesco, will join McCain and potato suppliers Branston, E Park and Puffin Produce to sponsor the 2023 primary school-based initiative, Grow Your Own Potatoes (GYOP).

Recent changes within the potato industry resulted in the funding for the GYOP programme ceasing.

However, the new funding enables 8,000 free potato-growing kits to be made available for primary schools nationwide.

Andrew Skea, managing director at Potato House, the home of GYOP, says: “Not only will [the partners] be helping to make a difference to the way children view food, they are also developing healthy eating habits. We now have the potential to reach 240,000 children with positive messages about potatoes – messaging that benefits the whole sector.â€

Since its inception, GYOP has reached well over six million children.
