The Ladds family runs a thriving mixed farm, balancing dairy, sheep farming, contracting services and diversification projects.
Their holistic approach to farming and business sustainability has earned them industry-wide recognition. At the heart of their operation is a 200-head Holstein dairy herd, producing an impressive 36-38 litres of milk per cow per day through twice-daily milking.
Their progressive reproductive programme includes using sexed semen for breeding and retaining store cattle until 20-24 months, ensuring optimal herd management and productivity. Alongside dairy, the Ladds family also manages 800 Texel cross and North of England Mule ewes, as well as 35 pedigree Texel ewes, which they breed to produce high-quality shearling tups.

In addition to livestock, the family has built a strong farm contracting business, offering services such as forage harvesting, round such as forage harvesting, round baling, slurry work, and GPS-controlled fertiliser spreading. Their use of precision technology, including GPS and auto-steer systems on tractors, has significantly improved efficiency and reduced waste.
Diversification
Moreover, recognising the importance of diversification, they operate a 45-site static caravan park, established in the aftermath of the foot-and-mouth crisis. This additional revenue stream has strengthened the farm's financial stability and provided long-term resilience.
Education and skill development are integral to the Ladds Family's ethos. They have forged a valuable partnership with Kendal College, hosting practical farming classes to provide students with hands-on experience. By fostering the next generation of skilled agricultural workers, they are contributing to the future of British farming.
Leadership within the family is shared by Andrew and Cath Ladds, alongside their sons Chris and Richard and their wives, Brooke and Beth. With support from three part-time staff members year-round and an additional workforce of up to ten during peak seasons, the business runs efficiently, adapting to the challenges of modern farming.

Sustainability is a priority for the Ladds Family, who have reduced fertiliser use by 25% through improved slurry management. They are also utilising the Forestry Creation Grant to plant unmanageable fields, further enhancing environmental stewardship. As tenant farmers, they understand the importance of optimising every acre and maintaining strong relationships with their landlords.
Upon winning the award, the family expressed their gratitude and joy.
