
Champion ewes and lambs which sold for £410/outfit
Strong trade for ewes and lambs at Skipton
There was an entry of 216 ewes with lambs at foot at Skipton on Monday which sold to £410/outfit for the champion pen, Texel ewes with Suffolk-cross lambs from Dayason Brown Farming, Burton Leonard.
The same vendors also consigned the winning North of England Mules with Texel cross lambs which went on to sell for a class topping £310/outfit. They also sold Suffolk cross ewes with singles to £235/outfit.
The top price singles at £390/outfit were the second prize Texel/Suffolk pen from Chris Hall, Whixley, who also sold Beltex ewes with twins at £380/outfit. The third prize Texel cross shearlings with singles from John Harry Hitchen, Luddenfoot, made £290/outfit.

Stronger outfits of lowland ewes with twins were £340-390 and the better outfits with singles were £280-£300.
Charollais ewes and twins topped at £350 for Richard Umpleby, Killinghall, and Cheviots with twins at £260 for the Bolland family, Airton.
The runners-up in the Mule show class from H Carr & Son £270, Malhamdale, sold for £270/outfit with stronger Mule outfits £260-£300. Zwartable ewes and twins sold to £240 for Jack Foster, Wigglesworth.

New calf record at Gisburn
Gisburn Auction Mart's weekly calf sale saw a new record top price of £950, while the stirk sale on the same day peaked at £1,480.
Leading the entry of 227 calves was a nine-week-old British Blue by the Genus bull Forest North Pole from R. Jackson and Sons, Clitheroe, while another from the same vendor at one month 22 days old and by Genus Newpole Kojak, made £910.
Almost 90% of the 38 British Blue bulls sold between £950 and £500 and all Blue bulls averaged £648.42.

The 45 British Blue heifers topped at £700 for a two-month, nine-day-old from Messrs Jackson, while a run of 15, one-month-old heifers from J. and S. A. Lancaster, Skipton, sold to £600 to average £540.
Charolais bulls sold to £810 for M. Mallinson, Halifax, with a six-week- old.
Limousin bulls peaked at £695 for a two-month-old from E. J. and J. Lonsdale, Padiham, with Simmentals to £685 for E. and L. M. and S. E. Barnes, Accrington.
The 32 Aberdeen-Angus bulls sold to £645 for a two-month-old ABS Espresso from S. and E. Wikinson, Clitheroe. J.E. and W.B. Wearing, Millom, sold Herefords to £745 for a two-month, 20-day-old bull calf.
The 142 stirks sold to £1,480 for a six-month-old Limousin cross British Blue steer from Richard Fitton, Bolton. At £1,320 was a batch of six to seven-month-old suckler-bred Limousins from R. A. and N. J. Wheelwright, Halifax.
Bull stirks topped at £1,180 for dairy cross Limousins from John Mellin, Long Preston, followed by Robert Capstick, Swinden Moor, at £1,160 with a Hereford.
Yearling dairy cross British Blue steers sold to £1,260. Heifer stirks topped at £1,200 for yearling Simmentals from Boustagill Farms, Settle.

Ewes and lambs in demand at Bentham
At Bentham Charolais ewes with strong Beltex lambs from R.M. Cornforth and Son, Newton Kyme, sold for £490/outfit while singles from the same home sold to £415 or £207.50/life.
Michael Dugdale, Giggleswick, sold ewes with twins to £495/outfit (£165/life). Mike Davis, Austwick, sold Beltex to £480, closely followed by Peter Holgate and Elsa McKechnie, Wigglesworth, with Texel shearlings at £475, matched by Frank Joel and Jack Edmondson, Westhouse, with aged ewes.
Apart from the very best, the next draw were £140-£150/life with the slightly younger lambs £120-£130/life, and an overall average of £138.48/life.
A pen of Mules with twins from Tony Ellis, New Hutton, made £300/outfit.

Calves sell to £960 at Leyburn
An increased entry of rearing calves at Leyburn saw 11 bull calves sell between £900 and £960.
Stephen Sowray, Bishop Thornton, gained the top price of £960 setting a new centre record with his 37 day-old British Blue bull which sold to Paul Johnson, York, who also paid £920 for a 35-day-old British Blue from the same home.

Blue heifers topped at £630 for John Pearson, Caldbergh, with Will Shuttleworth, Skipton, close behind at £605 and £600.
T.E. Ritchie and Sons, Doncaster, sold well grown Limousin bulls to £900. Broadley Farms, Ripon, sold their Limousin heifers to the top heifer price of £745.
Liz Bousfield, Barnard Castle, sold Aberdeen-Angus bulls to £765 with Aberdeen-Angus heifers topping at £470 for the Messrs Sowray.

Blackface hoggs at Longtown
The sale of prime hoggs at Longtown included the show and sale of Blackface hoggs judged by Morgan Reynolds, Scotbeef, who awarded the championship to Alfie Taylor, Heathery Hall, Biggar, whose pen went on to sell for £160/head. The third prize winners from the same home sold for £153/head and the second prize winners from A. Reid and Co, Glendearg, made £153/head.

Outwith the show, the sale topped at 468p/kg for Beltex hoggs from Mactaggart Bros and Co, Castle Douglas.
Top price per head was £222/head for Texel hoggs from D.S. and R. C. Taylor, Easter Ochtermuthill, Crieff, with an overall sale average of 331.79p/kg (SQQ 346.3p/kg).

Stirks sell to £2,780 at Carlisle
The Spring Stirk-Tacular sale at Carlisle had an entry of 125 bulls which averaged £1,633.84. The beef bred bulls topped at £2,780 for a 14-month-old Limousin from J. and R.E. Marston, Easegill Head. Messrs Gilleard, Thorninghurst, had a run of 18, 12-month-old Limousin and Charolais bulls which averaged £2,257, topping at £2,450 with a pen of three Charolais to £2,430/head.

Messrs Wigham, Haltwhistle, sold seven Limousin bulls to £2,060 for a pen of four. N. and K. Gill, Moory Lea, sold a British Blue nine-month-old bull for £2,200. Messrs Hayward, Hexham, sold five Aberdeen-Angus bulls to average £2,272 topping at £2,640.
Steers topped at £2,380 for Messrs Hughes, Dona Close, who sold four to average £2,175. Messrs Hall, Lanerton sold 14, eight/nine-month-old steers and heifers to average £1,515, topping at £1,610 for a pair. Neil Hardisty, Ennerdale, sold a run of eight to average £1,808 topping at £1,880.
Heifers sold to £2,750 for a pair of 10-month-old British Blue crosses from Messrs Gill, who sold 11 to average £2,022.

Limousin heifers top Darlington store sale
The Mid-March Extravaganza show and sale of store cattle at Darlington topped at £2,660/head for a two Limousin heifers from F.H. Hutchinson, Middleton One Row.
Next at £2,320 was a heifer from T.W. West, Egremont, who sold another at £2,300. Also making £2,300 each were heifers consigned by Wilkinson and Son, Carrside.
Topping the steer section was R.L. Dent, Mount Pleasant Farm, with two at £2,280.
T. Metcalfe and Son, Usha Gap, and W.A. Wardman, Redcar, both sold steers at £2,200 and A.P. and E. Proctor, Hillcrest, sold a British Blue steer at £2,180.
Bulls sold to £2,550 for a British Blue from B.R. Lawson, Richmond, followed by Messrs Wilkinson and Son with a consignment of Simmental bulls making £1,940/head.
The pre-sale show championship went to Nick and Kayley Gill, Moorey Lea, with an 11-month-old British Blue heifer, which sold for £2,100.
Reserve champion went to Robbie and Wayne Dalton, West End Farm, with a 10-month-old Limousin steer which made £2,120.

New cast bull record set
A new record of 339.5p/kg (£4,345) was set for a cast stock bull at Carlisle on Monday. This was for a 1,280kg Limousin bull from Messrs Common and Son, Lockerbie. Messrs Wight and Sons, Whitrigg Hill, sold a 1,071kg Limousin stock bull for 333.5p/kg (£3,571).
Beef cows topped at 399.5p/kg (£3,479) for a 871kg Limousin from Messrs Hutton, Keswick. The top price British Blue cow weighing 904kg was from Messrs Barrow, Pow Heads, and sold for 369.5p/kg (£3,340).
In the dairy cow section 17 sold for £2,000 or more topping at 297.5p/kg (£2,832) for a Montbelairde cross from Seymour Farms, Wigton.
