Dinmore Perfection wins again at Royal Cheshire Show

Perfection took the same title as a heifer at last year's Cheshire show fixture, and this time took the top honours with a heifer calf, by Ronick Hawk, at foot.

With stockman Richard Bartle on the halter, the cow and calf outfit had recently taken the breed and continental championships at the Royal Three Counties show.

Dinmore also took the junior inter-breed title with Dinmore Tenacious, a January 2022-born heifer by Diamant.

Reserve inter-breed

Reserve in the overall inter-breed judging, which was presided over by local showman John Okell, was the commercial beef champion, a Limousin cross heifer named Cover Girl, shown by Andrew Dickinson and Lisa Powdrill, Derbyshire.

The 14-month-old heifer was bought by Mr Dickinson at Ruthin Show potentials sale earlier this year. He had judged the pre-sale show where he had placed the heifer, bred by Bowen and Bowen, Welshpool, reserve champion before going on to secure it for £3,000.

Earlier this month the heifer took the reserve commercial championship ticket at Staffordshire County Show. It will next head to Derbyshire County and Newport shows.

Dairy inter-breed

In the dairy ring the championship went to local dairy farmers, Stephen and Isobel Moore, Middlewich, with their home-bred Holstein fourth calver, Danevalley Jonas Marie. Shown by daughter, Charlotte Moore, this was the first time the family had exhibited at the show.

The cow, which was reserve breed champion at last year's Cheshire show, calved in February and was shown giving 50 litres.

Its dam was bought as a calf from Switzerland and is descended from the famous Snickerdoodle family.

Two cattle breeds held their national shows at Cheshire; the Dairy Shorthorns and the Red Polls.

Winning the Dairy Shorthorn title was Paige Jepson, Stoke-on-Trent, with third calver, Cotonhall Jackpot Starlet. Starlet, which was bred by Rob Kite, was bought by Ms Jepson in 2021. It also claimed the breed championship at the recent Staffordshire County show.

Red Poll national show

The Red Poll winner was Pinguis Jeremiah, a 2019-born bull from Stephen Williams, Shropshire. The winner is a son of Pinguis Frederick and out of Pinguis Emily.

The gilt, Addison Golden Harvest, from Jack Holroyd, Lancashire, has taken first prize rosettes at a number of shows recently including the Royal Cornwall and Three Counties, but this marked her first championship win. It will next be shown at Anglesey show.

Reserve inter-breed pig, and winner of the modern section, was a Duroc gilt, Tedfold Lena 180 from Oliver Giles, West Sussex. This was a first championship win for the gilt, which has been out at several shows already this summer.

Sheep inter-breed

On day one of the show the sheep inter-breed went to a Texel shearling ewe from Jonathan Rees, Abergele, who was showing at the Cheshire show for the first time.

This home-bred ewe is by the 20,000gns Usk Vale Eddie and is one of 30 Texels that Mr Rees runs alongside a commercial flock.

Mr Rees, who also scooped the reserve Texel breed title with a ram lamb by Sportsmans Dare, will next be showing at the Anglesey and Denbigh and Flint and shows.

Reserve in the sheep inter-breed judging was a Hampshire Down ewe lamb, Redsyke Queenie, bred and exhibited by Sarah Miles, Cumbria. This was the first notable win for the ewe, which has recently taken first prize rosettes at Staffordshire County and Cumberland shows.

The ewe lamb, which had earlier won the any other native breed section, is by Graylen Obie, and is part of the 30-head Hampshire flock that Mrs Miles runs alongside flocks of Border Leicesters and Badger Face Texels, and a herd of Irish Moiled cattle.

Mrs Miles also took the reserve spot in the any other native breed category with another Hampshire, again by Graylen Obie.
