Highland calf sets new record at Oban

Highland Cattle breeders endured severe weather conditions to get to the show and sale at Oban on Monday.

Capleadh Ruadh of Cladich which sold for 11,000gns

 Achieving top price, and securing a new record price for a heifer calf of 11,000gns, was January 2023-born Capleadh Ruadh of Cladich by Angus 2 of Sorne (which sold for 27,000gns in February) from Messrs Strickland, Cladich fold, Dalmally. The buyer was Angus MacGillivray Highland Cattle Service, Dalmally.

The top price three-year-old female, at 9,200gns, was Bhoidheach Beag 21 of Shenavallie, a daughter of Neil Ruadh of Shenavallie, in-calf to Ross of Rhudle, from Duncan Buchanan, Oban, which sold for 9,200gns to Balrownie Farms, Brechin.

Marsili 29 of Leys - a two-year-old heifer from Leys Fold, Inverness - was tapped out as overall female champion

and went on to sell for 5,500gns to Falko Steinberg, Germany. 

Reserve overall female and yearling champion was Kirsty 8 of Gartocharn, a daughter of Brodie of Culfoich, from Jim and Catherine McKechnie, Gartocharn, which sold for 6,500gns to Milly Bradley, Devon.

The champion three-year-old was Kathleen 14 of Earn, which had been champion at the Great Yorkshire Show. By Magnus of Earn, in-calf to Doddie of Pressock and bred by Heather Corrigall - but consigned by Graeme and Rebecca Easton - it sold for 8,000gns to Norman McBurnie, Ballymena, Northern Ireland. 

Averages - 5 three-year-old heifers, £5,417; 12 two-year-old heifers, £2,617; 20 yearling heifers, £2,425.50; 27 heifer calves, £1,983.75; 1 cow, £3,675; 6 unhaltered cows, £1,680.
