Holsteins win at the Welsh Dairy show

The weather did not dampen the spirits at the Welsh Dairy Show held at the United Counties showground in Carmarthen with some of the best cattle the Welsh dairy industry has to offer on display.

Welsh Dairy show inter-breed champion

The Holstein champion and winning senior cow, Aliann Mincio Kitty was crowned the Welsh Dairy Show inter-breed champion.  

 

The 10 year-old-cow was exhibited by the Jones and Sercombe families, Gwent and is no stranger to the show ring, claiming the same title at the show in 2021. Earlier this year Kitty won best udder at the Royal Welsh show and placed fourth at UK Dairy Day and is gave 13,000 litres in her last lactation. 

 

Kitty is a daughter of the 13,000gns Aliann Minister Kitty. the Holstein judge, Mark Davis, Tiverton who runs the 280-head Rivermead herd of Jerseys, said: "This cow is just stunning and has an excellent mammary system, showing her longevity."  

 

 

Reserve inter-breed champion

 The reserve inter-breed was awarded to Erie Tequilabay Grove, the Jersey champion from Iwan Morgan, Carmarthen.

 

A second calver by Tequila, she is a daughter of Erie Baywatch Grove, a previous Royal Welsh breed champion. She was reserve breed champion at this year's Royal Welsh show. This cow is currently producing 34 lires a day.

 

Mr Davis said: "This cow is a powerhouse with an advantage over the other cows because of her width and style."

 

Holsteins

Reserve champion Holstein was Knowlesmere Miss Brandysnap, which took the inter-breed and best udder titles at last year's Welsh Dairy Show. This sixth calver placed second in her class to the champion and was exhibited by Richard and Bethan Thomas, Carmarthen. Classified EX96, Brandysnap is a Denmire Mesdoor daughter. She was the reserve breed champion at this years Royal Welsh show.. 

 

Riverdane Awesome Ambrosia claimed the honourable mention title for Arwyn Wilson, Kevin Rickard and Selwyn Richards, all of South Wales, who purchased the cow for for 25,000gns from the Nutsford family at their  Theatre of Dreams sale in August.  . She calved down in June after giving just shy of 10,000 litres on her first lactation and is classified as VG89.   

 

The winning Holstein heifer was Wiltor Chief Atlee 2 from  D. and C. Jones, Monmouthshire with Wiltor Chief Atlee 2. The two-year-old junior heifer is sired by Stantons Chief and is a daughter of Wyndford Doorman Atlee 2, a previous UK National Holstein Show winner.  It went on to take the reserve inter-breed title.  

 Jersey

The reserve champion Jersey was a 2019 purchase from the Glanmor herd. This was Kevin and Sian Rickard's Whitefire Dazzler Flamingo, a junior cow in milk from their herd based in Newport. The cow, which was was reserve breed champion at UK Dairy Day this year, has given 7,100 litres in her last lactation. 

 

Honourable mention was the winning heifer, Mydrim Victorias Love Me Tara from James Evans, Carmarthen. The October 2021-born heifer won her class at this year's Royal Welsh show and was part of the inter-breed pairs last year.  

  

Ayrshire   

Ayrshire and inter-breed heifer champion was awarded to Allstar Ringer Joybell from Evie Tomlinson, Cardigan. She is fresh from UK Dairy Day where she won the National Ayrshire title. This June 2021-born heifer is from Miss Tomlinson's Joybell line, and her three heifers won heifer championship titles at UK Dairy Day.   

 

Amelia Picton-Davies, St Clears, took the reserve champion and honourable mention in the Ayrshires. Asgood Dreamer Lucky was awarded reserve and is a daughter of Loukat Lucky, a previous UK Dairy Day champion.   

 

The second prize heifer in milk, Gilwen Remsberg Flo received honourable mention. The July 2021-born heifer is a daughter of Palmyra Power Remsberg.  

 

Brown Swiss  

In the Brown Swiss section, Carningli Blooming Heke won breed champion. Bred and exhibited by Dylan Roberts from Carningli Dairy, Pembroke. She is producing 32kg daily before being dried off in January and is out of   She is producing 32kg daily before being dried off in January and is out of Scherma Glenn Blooming.   

 

Mr Davis said: "This cow has a superb udder and was the freshest on the day which put her above the rest.  

 

Stephen Jones, Usk, took reserve with Hollysprings Herberst Silver, after placing second to the champion in the cow in milk class. The August 2019-born cow is a Herberst daughter.  

 

Honourable mention also went to the Carningli Dairy with Carningli Doodle Lucky with a November 2020-born heifer.

Calf show   

The champion calf in the Holstein section was Churchvale Delta Lambda Ghost from Matt Norman who made the journey from Devon. She is a class winner from the All Breeds All Britain show and is a daughter of Farnear Delta Lambda.   

 

Reserve went to Kevin Rickard, Newport with Riverdane Hot Date which was purchased from the Riverdane herd in August and won its class at the UK Dairy Day. She is a daughter of Farnear Delta Lambda and out of Duckett Doorman Hustle.  

 

The coloured calf champion was awarded to the Jersey, Mydrim Tequila Spring Tracey from James Evans, Carmarthen. This April 2022-born calf won her class at the Royal Welsh in the summer and took  second place at the National Jersey show at The Dairy Show at the Bath and West showground. She also claimed the best exhibitor bred calf.   

 

Reserve champion went to Stuart Williams, Haverfordwest with Kedar Calvin T-Shirt, a March 2023-born heifer which won the reserve Brown Swiss at the All Breeds All Britain calf show earlier this month.
