YFC news: Holstein Young Breeders bursary announced for 2024

Cameron McGregor from the Scotland Holstein Young Breeders (HYB) Club has been chosen as the recipient of the 2024 Sue Cope Bursary.

Cameron, who is in his final year of HYB, currently farms the Glenvalley herd alongside his father and brother. He applied for the bursary so that he could purchase a clipping chute to help him work towards achieving his ambition of promoting the Glenvalley prefix to showcase their bloodlines and genetic potential.

He said: "My membership of HYB has been an amazing experience that has led to many great opportunities and personal achievements. I returned home to the family farm in August last year after working on other local dairy farms after leaving agricultural college. Between this time, I have developed my clipping skills preparing cattle for shows and sales. Clipping and cattle preparation has always been something I have taken great joy in doing and it has given me so many opportunities to work with many wonderful herds and travel far and wide. The prospect of being able to work with cattle safely and turn them out to their best is something I have dreamed about for years.

"The Scottish Club has had a great influx of enthusiastic young talent recently and I am very passionate about helping to keep this interest growing and giving back in any way I can. A clipping chute would not only allow me to work more safely, but it would also allow me to host workshops for members sharing and showing them the tricks of the trade more easily and in a safe environment. I am so grateful to be the recipient of the Bursary and I am really looking forward to giving back to my HYB club and also local Young Farmer's Clubs which will promote and encourage more interest in HYB."
