Young Farmer Focus - Emily Hanson: "My dream is to have my own farm"

I might not have grown up on a farm, but my passion for farming has always been evident from a young age.

My journey began with animals at the age of 11 when I started volunteering at Goldthorpe Primary School in Barnsley to work with a variety of creatures, including poultry, over a three-year period.

At 14, I started working for my uncle on a pig farm — witnessing all the hard work and dedication farmers put into their business.

It was truly inspirational to see first-hand and it fuelled my determination to pursue a career in this industry.

Young Farmer Focus - Kestrel Lambert: "As an outsider to the industry, I think you do not realise how vast farming is and the pressures farmers face"

I am now studying Level 2 Agriculture at Barnsley College and, I have to say, it has been an amazing experience.

Every day is different.

The hands-on learning experience is incredibly enriching and provides me with a deep understanding of animal husbandry to care and nurture the animals.

I currently work with a range of animals - including pigs, sheep, llamas, cows, goats and poultry - with a focus on their health and welfare.

When I grow up, I want to be a shepherdess and show sheep.

Learning skills such as dagging sheep to remove faeces from their wool; halter training for safe movement; and administering injections, foot trims and health checks, are crucial for achieving my career goals.

Some people have gained these skills by growing up on a farm, but I am learning it now by studying at a working farm, which is fantastic.

I am also gaining insights into animal enrichment practices and their dietary needs and consumption patterns.

I was also part of a group of students which built an enclosure for pigs, which has enhanced my abilities in fence installation and developed an awareness of potential hazards and risks in field and enclosure management.

Despite the numerous rewards farming offers, it comes with several challenges, including environmental concerns, financial constraints and people trying to change farming.

Íæż½ã½ã play a crucial role in sustaining the environment through food production and land management.

They often face a lack of recognition and financial compensation for their work and dedication to the industry.

Despite these challenges, I am determined to pursue my dream of owning a farm in the future, where I can produce crops and keep sheep.

I look forward to working in the agricultural industry.

It is a sector where I can continuously learn, develop and contribute positively to the environment.
